Most regions will meet their summer peaks but Texas and California are at risk, NERC said in its 2019 Summer Reliability Assessment.

ERCOT said its final summer 2019 resource adequacy assessment indicates “a potential need” to enter energy emergency alert status for system reliability.

ERCOT is forecasting record peak demand with increased potential emergency alerts this summer, given its historically low planning reserve margin of 7.4%.

Having successfully met system demand this summer, ERCOT said it will have “sufficient” generation to meet smaller load for the next six months.

ERCOT said that it expects to have enough installed generating capacity available to meet fall and winter peak demand.

The bulk power system showed improved ability to rebound from severe storms last year while continuing to improve on most other reliability metrics.

ERCOT said it expects the recent retirement of coal-fired and aging units to result in tight operating reserves this summer .

Despite the retirement of more than 3.5 GW of generation, ERCOT said it has enough installed capacity available.

ERCOT’s latest resource adequacy forecasts project the Texas grid will have sufficient installed generating capacity this fall and winter.

ERCOT said it has sufficient capacity to meet demand for the next five years, including a forecast record peak this summer.
